FAQs

Your guide to underlay straight from the experts who live it every day.

Is Tredaire® the best underlay brand available?

"I'm going to keep this brief, because the answer doesn't need to be complicated. Tredaire® has been setting the standard in premium carpet underlay for decades. Our products are manufactured in the UK to exacting specifications, independently certified, and recommended by flooring professionals across the country. Is it the best? Let me put it this way, there's a reason our competitors benchmark against us. Mission accomplished."

What's the difference between the ranges under the Tredaire® name?

"Good question. Here's your briefing. The full Tredaire® range covers everything from excellent-value underlays for everyday use right through to our Premier range; our flagship products, engineered for maximum comfort, luxury and longevity. All of them meet our quality standards. The step-up in the premium range is about density, performance over time, and that extraordinary underfoot feeling. If you can afford to go higher - do it. You'll notice the difference every single day."

How much should I spend on underlay?

"Spend as much as you can reasonably afford. I know that sounds like sales talk, but hear me out. Your carpet is going to be the largest single item in most rooms. The underlay protects that investment and determines how it performs for its entire life. A quality underlay is typically 10-15% of the total flooring cost, and it will make a greater difference to how the carpet feels than almost any other factor. Invest in the underlay, and the carpet rewards you."

Do I need a different underlay for different rooms?

"Broadly, yes. High-traffic areas like hallways and stairs need a denser, more resilient underlay. Living rooms and bedrooms are where you want to prioritise comfort and luxury. If you have underfloor heating, you need an underlay with an appropriate tog rating. The good news: the Tredaire® range covers all of these scenarios. Your stockist can advise, or use our guide to find the right product for each room."

Will I need to fit new underlay when I replace my carpet?

"Almost always, yes. If the underlay is in good condition and relatively new, it may be suitable for reuse, but check it carefully for compression, staining and wear. More often than not, it makes sense to replace both carpet and underlay at the same time. Starting fresh gives you the best performance and the full benefit of your new carpet. Don't undermine a new carpet with old underlay. That's not the mission."

What does 'tog rating' mean for underlay?

"Ooh, I love this one. So, a tog rating is a measure of thermal resistance; how good a material is at retaining heat. You'll know it from duvets, where higher tog means warmer. Same principle for underlay. Underlay tog ratings typically range from around 0.6 to 3.5 - the higher the number, the better the heat retention. Your carpet has a tog rating too, and the combined total determines how thermally efficient your floor is. The sweet spot for most rooms without underfloor heating? As high as you can get. For underfloor heating rooms, you want to keep the combined carpet and underlay tog below 2.5. Fabulously fascinating, right?"

What does 'density' mean and why does it matter?

"Right, let's get to the bottom of this. Density - measured in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³) - tells you how much material is packed into a given volume of underlay. A high-density underlay has more material per cubic centimetre, which means it compresses less under foot traffic, recovers its shape more quickly (that's the bounce-back), and maintains its performance properties for much longer. A low-density underlay might feel great on day one but flatten within a couple of years, losing all its cushioning and thermal properties. So always check the density. Higher is better. That's the science."

What materials are used to make Tredaire® underlay?

"Great question, I could talk about this all day. The main materials in the Tredaire® range are polyurethane (PU) foam and crumb rubber. PU foam is lightweight, resilient and easy to work with, and our products use a significant proportion of recycled foam content. Crumb rubber is made from recycled car tyres; dense, durable and brilliant for high-traffic areas. Our renu® range goes even further, using 98% recycled materials in a bio-based film that's actually carbon negative. The packaging is 100% recycled too. It's all geek to me… in the best possible way."

Does carpet underlay reduce noise?

"Absolutely it does - and the science is genuinely impressive. Underlay reduces what's called impact sound, the noise created when something strikes the floor surface. Footsteps, dropped objects, children running, that sort of thing. A quality underlay absorbs this impact energy before it can transmit through the floor structure. The denser and thicker the underlay, the better the acoustic performance. Tredaire® underlay provide significant sound reduction, which matters enormously in multi-storey homes or if you have an energetic household. Ta-da!"

Can underlay help with allergies?

"This is a really interesting area. Carpet with a quality underlay actually acts as a filter, trapping dust particles, allergens and other airborne particulates within the pile rather than allowing them to circulate in the air. Regular vacuuming then removes these particles, so paradoxically, a properly maintained carpet can actually improve air quality compared to hard flooring, which can allow dust to become airborne more easily. This is particularly relevant for households with asthma or hay fever sufferers. My recommendation: choose a quality underlay, keep the carpet well vacuumed, and you're onto a winner."

How is Tredaire® underlay manufactured?

"I will now explain and it's fascinating. PU foam underlay is produced by combining polyol and isocyanate chemicals in a controlled reaction that creates the cellular foam structure. The density and cell structure of the foam are controlled precisely during manufacturing to achieve the specified performance properties. Our crumb rubber products are made by grinding recycled car tyres into small particles, which are then bound together under heat and pressure. And renu®? That uses steam-cleaned foam from recycled soft furnishings, bound together and wrapped in bio-based film. The whole process is designed to minimise waste and maximise performance. My lab, my rules - and the results speak for themselves."

Will I really notice the difference between cheap and premium underlay?

"Oh, absolutely. Unequivocally, unmistakably, immediately. The moment you step onto a carpet fitted with Tredaire® premium underlay, you'll feel something change. It's not just softer, it's the whole sensation of the floor beneath you. It's warm. It's quiet. It's that extraordinary feeling of luxury that you didn't expect from something you can't even see. I've been trying to find the right words for it for years. The closest I've come: it's like the whole room gives you a gentle hug every time you walk into it. Not just any underlay. Not by a long way."

Does underlay make a room feel cosier?

"This might be my favourite question. Yes. Yes it does. And not just in a vague, subjective sense, there is actual science here (Edi will fill you in on the thermal properties). But beyond the temperature, there's something deeply comforting about a room with proper carpet and quality underlay. The sound is different; quieter, warmer, more contained. The light feels different when a room isn't bouncing echoes off a hard floor. And underfoot? There's no place like home, right? And home feels best when it's properly carpeted with the right underlay underneath."

Is premium underlay worth it for a bedroom?

"Is comfort worth it in the one room where you spend time winding down, recovering, finding peace? Yes. Unquestionably yes. I feel the need… the need for comfort! Especially in a bedroom. The first thing you feel in the morning, padding across the floor on bare feet, is the floor beneath you. Make that first feeling as good as it can possibly be. That's what Tredaire® does. That's why it matters. Every morning. Every night. Every step."

What does Tredaire® underlay feel like?

"People ask me this and I always pause, because the honest answer is that language doesn't quite do it justice. I've tried. Comfier than a herd of Persian cats cuddling on a cluster of cosy cashmere cushions? Getting closer. Like six million finest velvet cushions on a bed of feathers? Warmer. A warm sunbeam peeping through the clouds on a summer morning? Almost. The truth is: nothing on earth feels like Tredaire®. Which is, of course, exactly the point."

Can underlay help with joint pain or tiredness from standing?

"This matters to me enormously because comfort isn't just a luxury, it's a genuine quality-of-life consideration. Standing and walking on a hard, unsupported surface all day is genuinely tiring, particularly for feet, knees and lower backs. A quality, cushioned underlay beneath your carpet reduces the impact transmitted through the floor with every step, and over the course of a day, that adds up. For people who spend a lot of time on their feet at home, the difference a good underlay makes is real and meaningful. This is the comfort everyone deserves."

Is there an eco-friendly underlay option?

"Yes! And I'm so glad you asked. Tredaire® renu® is our award-winning range of sustainable carpet underlay, and I am genuinely proud of it. renu® is made from 98% recycled materials. We take foam from recycled soft furnishings, steam-clean it and bind it together into an underlay that performs brilliantly. It's 100% recyclable. The packaging uses bio-based film made from sustainably sourced sugar cane, which is actually carbon negative, actively capturing CO2 from the atmosphere. And it's made right here in the UK, reducing transportation miles. Small changes, big impact. This is what sustainable flooring looks like."

What happens to underlay at the end of its life?

"This is so important. And the answer for renu® is genuinely exciting. When your renu® underlay has reached the end of its useful life, you can return it to Tredaire®, and we will use it to create new rolls of renu®. A true circular economy. No waste. No landfill. Just brilliant, renu-®ably sustainable underlay. For the rest of the Tredaire® range, our PU foam underlays contain recycled content and are progressively being developed for improved recyclability. Our long-term goal is a fully sustainable range, and we're making real progress. Tread lightly, everyone."

Are Tredaire® underlays made with recycled materials?

"Many of them are, and we're working on making that all of them. renu® is made from 98% recycled materials; recycled foam from soft furnishings, 100% recycled paper backing, and bio-based packaging film. Our crumb rubber underlays are made from recycled car tyres - we'll never grow tyre-d of that one. And our PU foam range incorporates recycled foam content too. Every year we push this further. It's one giant leap for sustainability, and we're only just getting started."

Does choosing eco-friendly underlay mean compromising on quality?

"Absolutely not. I will defend that passionately. renu® performs to the same high standards as the rest of the Tredaire® range. It has excellent density (9mm, 120-160 kg/m³ depending on the grade), great tog ratings for thermal insulation, and that same luxurious feel underfoot that makes Tredaire® so good. You do not have to choose between quality and sustainability. You can have both. Planet Earth - you're looking good."

Is buying British underlay better for the environment?

"Yes. Manufacturing in the UK means significantly shorter supply chains and lower transportation emissions compared to products shipped from overseas. Our Haslingden facility is continuously working to reduce its environmental impact. And because our products are made here, we can maintain rigorous quality and sustainability standards at every stage of production. Keeping our mileage to a minimum - it's only one small step for us, but it's one giant leap for sustainability."

Can underlay reduce energy bills?

"It can! And this is a really satisfying double benefit. A quality underlay with a high tog rating acts as a thermal barrier, reducing heat loss from rooms through the floor. Studies suggest rooms with carpet and quality underlay are perceived as up to 2°C warmer, and that can translate to energy savings of around 6%. So not only is renu® made sustainably, it helps you use less energy too. Less energy used = smaller carbon footprint = happy Clover."
